International Toad Day

A global day dedicated to toads, their ecological importance and the protection of their habitats.

Our story

From an Israeli initiative to a growing international day

International Toad Day was founded in Israel in 2026 by Avi Zobel and Reptiles of Israel. It was created to challenge old myths, give toads the recognition they deserve and encourage education, research and habitat conservation around the world.

The first International Toad Day was observed on May 15, 2026. During its inaugural year, it entered Israel's educational and natural-history calendars and was marked by nature, wildlife and educational communities in several countries - laying the foundation for a new annual global tradition.

“The initiative for International Toad Day was born to shatter old myths and give toads everywhere the respect they deserve as a critical link in the food chain - both in the wild and in our home gardens.” - Avi Zobel, Founder

Why it matters

Why does the toad need its own day?

For years, toads have been cast in the shadow of frogs. Frogs and toads belong to the same biological order, Anura, but they often represent very different ways of life.

Toads typically evolved thicker, more water-resistant skin, powerful chemical defenses and a greater ability to survive away from water. In many ways, they represent a tougher, more terrestrial path within amphibian evolution.

The toad is not “just another frog.” It is a fascinating, resilient creature and an important ecological partner. Toads consume many insects and other invertebrates, while species around the world face increasing pressure from habitat destruction, climate change, disease and pollution.

A surprising fact

Israel has only one true toad species

Israel has only one true toad species: the Green Toad (Bufotes viridis). Although it is sometimes confused with other amphibians, it is the country's only representative of the true toad family, Bufonidae.

Protecting Israel's toads therefore means protecting an entire, unique species and an irreplaceable part of the local ecosystem.

Know the difference

Frog or toad?

FeatureFrog - typicallyTrue toad - typically
SkinSmoother, moist-looking skinDrier-looking, thicker and bumpier skin
HabitatOften remains close to waterOften spends more time on land and returns to water to breed
MovementLonger leapsWalking and shorter, sturdy hops
LegsOften longer hind legsOften shorter, stronger legs
DefenseRapid escape, frequently toward waterDeterrent secretions from skin and parotoid glands

These are useful general tendencies, not strict scientific rules. “Frog” and “toad” are common names within the same order.

Must-know facts

Three reasons to appreciate toads

They do not cause warts

The bumpy texture of a toad's skin is part of its natural anatomy. The old claim that touching a toad causes human warts is a myth.

Natural pest controllers

Toads feed on insects and other invertebrates and can be valuable neighbors in gardens and agricultural landscapes.

Remarkable resilience

Many toads can use terrestrial habitats and tolerate drier conditions better than many other amphibians.

They still need protection

Wetland loss, pesticide use, pollution, roads, disease and climate change threaten amphibian populations worldwide.

International Toad Day | May 15th

 🐸

Why does the toad need its own day?

For years, toads have been cast in the shadow of frogs. While World Frog Day is celebrated on March 20th,
the "Reptiles of Israel" initiative is leading a global call
to establish International Toad Day on May 15th

Frogs and toads belong to the same biological order, but they represent very different lifestyles.

Toads evolved thicker, more water-resistant skin, powerful chemical defenses, and a greater ability to survive away from water.

In many ways, they represent a shift toward life on land — a tougher, more resilient path within amphibian evolution.

The toad is not "just another frog." It is a fascinating, resilient creature and a vital ecological partner to humans everywhere. As highly effective biological pest controllers, toads play a critical role in global biodiversity. Today, many toad species across the globe are facing increasing threats due to habitat destruction,
climate change, and pollution

International Toad Day represents a global commitment to protecting toads worldwide

"The initiative for International Toad Day was born to shatter old myths and give toads everywhere the respect they deserve as a critical link in the food chain—both in the wild and in our home gardens."Avi Zobel, Founder

Frog or Toad: What’s the difference and why does it matter?

Many people confuse the two, but they represent very different worlds within the order Anura

FeatureFrogToad
Skin AppearanceUsually smooth, moist, and shiny.Dry, bumpy, and "warty."
HabitatStays close to permanent water sources.Primarily terrestrial; seeks water mainly for breeding.
MovementLong, high leaps.Walking, crawling, or short, sturdy hops.
Leg StructureLong hind legs designed for jumping.Shorter, stronger legs built for walking and digging.
DefenseFast escape by leaping into water.Secretes deterrent substances (Parotoid glands) to ward off predators.

 Must-Know Toad Facts

  1. They do NOT cause warts: This is an ancient myth! The bumpy texture of a toad's skin is for camouflage and moisture retention; it is completely harmless to humans

  2. Global Pest Controllers: A single toad can consume hundreds of insects, cockroaches, and slugs in a single night. Around the world, they are nature's most effective alternative to chemical pesticides

  3. Remarkable Resilience: Toads inhabit diverse environments, from lush forests to arid dunes. Their ability to adapt makes them essential indicators of environmental health across the planet

How Can You Help

  • Stop Using Pesticides: Toxic chemicals harm toads directly through their sensitive, absorbent skin

  • Protect Local Habitats: Preserve wetlands and create safe, shaded spaces in your own garden

  • Support Conservation: Join global efforts to monitor toad populations and report sightings to local nature organizations

International Toad Day is officially recognized in the Global Environmental Dates list on Wikipedia.

International Toad Day is officially recognized and featured by the National Natural History Collections of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
International Toad Day is now officially recognized and included in Israel’s national “Green Calendar” of the education system.

In Israel, There Is Only One Toad

In Israel, there is only one true toad species — the Green Toad (Bufotes viridis). As the only representative of the true toad family (Bufonidae) in the country, its survival carries exceptional importance. Protecting it means preserving an entire lineage and maintaining a crucial part of the local ecological balance.
